The Legend of Mad Martha | Part 3

The Legend of Mad Martha follows a group of students from rival high schools as they wander through a cemetery on Halloween night, recounting the legend of the town’s most famous ghost. It’s all fun and games, at least for Mallory’s boyfriend and the others, until the group is separated and the story of Mad Martha comes to life.

“The governor did it, of course, and there was a huge public trial in the town square. Martha oversaw the entire thing, and no one dared to question her. She told the wives that they deserved to die for their actions, but that she’d spare them if they agreed to surrender themselves in servitude to her.”

“Well, for how long?” Theo asks.

I look up at Tyler, and his smile broadens even further. We answer in unison. “Forever.”

Staying Fearless in Your Writing

I remember when I started writing at age 15. It was September 11, 2009. And I just started writing. I didn’t know what I was doing, and I didn’t care about the grammar and format or who would read it. I just had a story in my heart and characters I wanted to tell it through. In fact, I realized that the “dream boyfriend” I’d concocted in my head and other people I’d envisioned growing up were all characters. I just hadn’t known it yet. And so at 15, I embarked on a journey that would lead me to where I am today, writing on my own blog, publishing what I consider to be my debut “adult” novel online, and talking to you all.

“Dude, if you don’t know the story, why’d you want to come so bad?” Pierce asks.

“You guys know I’m new here! I figured this was just for fun. You know, wander around the graveyard, scare ourselves and go home. You didn’t tell me there was any story.” Theo quirks his lips and shrugs.

Tyler’s dark eyes beam with excitement. He passes me the flashlight and seizes the moment, immediately plunging into a dramatic retelling of The Legend of Mad Martha.

Within Book Launch!

I have only recently gotten back into the writing community, mostly thanks to the fantastic and passionate people over at Twitter. Through one of the writers there, I discovered JukePop Serials, a site that allows authors to publish their original work on a chapter-by-chapter basis, enabling them to build up a following as well as improve upon and mold their story as they write.

Within has been in my head for over a year and a half, and now that I’ve finally plunged into writing it (and am working on chapter 10), I felt it was time to show the work I do to you all, as well as anyone else who is interested. So I’m very pleased to announce that the book’s first three chapters are now live on JukePop, and it’s going to be updated weekly!

I’d love for you to come along on this journey with me and Luna, so whether you want to make a JukePop account where you can get the latest updates immediately and vote for each chapter to be ranked higher on the site, or just want to check it periodically and let me know your thoughts over here, or even send me a tweet, all is appreciated!

Read the first 3 chapters right now!

A year of recurring nightmares has beckoned 20-year-old Luna Carlisle back to her home town of Rockport, Massachusetts. For the past two decades, locals have attributed the mysterious deaths that plague the town to a malevolent force known only as “The Darkness.”

Luna always figured it to be nothing more than an old wives’ tale. Until she came face-to-face with it at 13.

Now the same thing that drove her parents away six years earlier has brought her back, and it’s only a matter of days before Luna’s nightmares start to obscure reality. She battles hallucinations, black outs and, worst of all, a strange voice inside her head. She sounds a lot like her, but Luna can’t believe a word the girl in the mirror says.

Or can she?

No one can be trusted. Not on-again-off-again love and best friend Hook, or kind but elusive new acquaintance Ronan. In the wake of a horrifying premonition, Luna is forced to turn to none other than the girl inside her. She is Luna’s only hope at uncovering the truth behind The Darkness’ identity and breaking the hold it has over Rockport and its residents while there is still a town left to save.

The Legend of Mad Martha | Part 1

I’ve decided to write a short Halloween story inspired by a writing prompt I saw on Twitter a few weeks ago, and thought it would be fun to share it here over the next two weeks. The Legend of Mad Martha follows a group of students from rival high schools as they wander through a cemetery on Halloween night, recounting the legend of the town’s most famous ghost. It’s all fun and games, at least for Mallory’s boyfriend, until the two are separated and the story of Mad Martha comes to life.
