The First Life Update (Feb 2019)

Hey, everyone!

Long time, no write. The last half of 2018 was a whirlwind. I lost my job, started doing freelance again, changed my major and now, here I am. I’m 25, pushing 26, not at all certain what I want to do with the rest of my life, and finally realizing that that’s okay.

So, here’s a quick summary of what I’ve been up to (and a refresher of who I am for anyone who hasn’t seen this blog on their dash in forever):

  • Ghostwriting freelance content, not making a lot of money but building a portfolio that I’m designing myself.
  • Realizing that as much as I love NYC, the prices are insane and I maybe don’t want to be a corporate slave for the rest of my life to aspire for a closet apartment all-my-own
  • Changing my major from new media communications to  psychology with a concentration in mental health & counseling
  • Trying to be more mindful, and realizing that living in the present is an incredible way to heal wounds from your past
  • Taking pictures and learning how to draw
  • Learning French and Korean
  • Narrowing down book idea so I can recommit to a project and see it through to the end. Right now, it’s shaping up to be a multi-POV, cyberpunk supernatural.

I used to tweet @jessicadotjpg, but I honestly don’t connect with that account anymore. Most of it feels stagnant and contrived, and I really hate the writing community’s tendency to emphasis self-loathing and exhaustion with writing. Don’t get me wrong, everyone gets fed up with their own work now and again, but I don’t believe we should buy in to the stigma that you aren’t a real author unless writing your book makes you miserable and you need to pound a bottle of wine before you can read something you wrote without cringing.

learning to draw. this was from my first class yesterday.

Usually, I tweet @lunasysims right now. That account started off as a hobby, a place where I’d post video game content. Now, I have a blog for it, too – lunasysims.wordpress.com. I want to turn it into a place for creative will-bes (not wannabes) and video game fans alike. As I move into my psychology degree, I’m gaining the type of knowledge and self-awareness I need to help people through words. That’s what I’ve always wanted, I just didn’t know until recently.

Anyway, this is a short post, but I hope you’re all doing well. Let me know what you’ve been up to! Introduce yourself in the comments, tell me a funny anecdote or share your latest creative endeavors. I’m in the process of launching a small side-blog to house my photographs (currently just taken with an iPhone and the Huji Cam app, but I’m looking to get my actual camera repaired).

I’ll also be posting my book cover and a summary soon, which I think will make me more accountable haha. I’d also like to start content consulting on this blog. As much as I love writing, I also like helping people learn how to write better. I don’t mean grammar and vocabulary. While important, what people really need to learn when writing content is how to identify their audience and speak to them in a way that’s real. It’s so easy to find yourself on paper, but it’s easy to lose yourself there, too, when you are trying too hard to be appealing.

That’s for another post. In the meantime, take care, have an awesome weekend, and I’ll see you soon!
